FAQs about our liquids and sprays

This blog post aims to answer some frequently asked questions about our artemis liquids and sprays range

Why take a liquid instead of a tablet or capsule?

We love liquids for many reasons, but the main benefit for you is that *liquids work fast*.

Because you don’t need to break them down like you do with a tablet or a capsule, the active compounds from the plants are absorbed quickly so you can start feeling better, faster.

Other benefits of liquids include:

Flexible dosing - means more bang for your buck. E.g: one product for kids from birth to age 12; or one product that can be taken at a low dose daily for maintenance support and at a higher dose acutely.

Less need for additives – liquid extractions are traditional for herbs and they are quite stable in this format, meaning no need for artificial preservatives, additives, colours, gelatin caps, or tableting aids.

Easy absorption – As well as absorbing quickly, liquids are also less taxing on the digestive system.  This is also a bonus for those of us who have compromised digestion.

How do I take my artemis oral liquid?

Right off the spoon!

There is no need to mix the products with anything, though they can be diluted with water or juice if desired.

Many products are a 5ml dose, which is the size of one standard teaspoon.

How do I take my artemis spray?

Most of our sprays can be sprayed into the mouth and will absorb via the mucus membranes. This makes them work fast!

The ThroatRepair Spray has a long nozzle which can be directed towards the back of the throat or wherever it is needed for fast-acting support.

How long do I take my artemis oral liquid for?

This depends on what product you are taking and for what reason.  Many of our liquids are designed to support your body long-term and can be taken daily at the maintenance dose.

Some products make sense to take for a shorter period of time and this will be clearly stated on the label.  For example, some of the products in our immune range are designed for acute support and can be taken at a higher dose for 5-7 days.

How do the oral liquids taste?

Our oral liquids are plant extracts in a glycerine base.

Glycerine is naturally sweet (but does not affect blood sugars).  We also use small amounts of food grade essential oils and some natural flavours to ensure that they are tasty enough for you to want to take every day.  To get an idea of the flavour of a specific product, check out the essential oil listed on the ingredient list (eg: if it’s lemon, it probably has a lemon flavour).

Where do your oral liquid ingredients come from?

As medicinal plant experts, we source plants from wherever they grow best in the world.  The plants in our oral liquid range commonly come from Europe and Australia.

And while we shouldn’t pick favourites, we do have a special hero ingredient which features in all of our respiratory and immune range, and that is Central Otago Thyme, which we lovingly and sustainably harvest and extract ourselves from right here in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Why is there ethanol in your products?

The artemis oral liquids are made up of plant extracts called tinctures.

Tinctures are a traditional way of extracting herbs using a combination of water and ethanol to pull out the active compounds in the plants.

The final liquid contains ethanol, water, and the plant compounds in a very concentrated form - meaning that you don't need to use very much for it to have an action on the body.

This way of ingesting herbal medicine has been used for centuries, even for children.

It sometimes helps to compare the amount of ethanol in a tincture to that of common foods - eg: a ripe banana contains 0.2g/100g; bread contains about 1.2g/100gm.  Vinegars, some condiments, and some fizzy drinks are other common foods that contain ethanol.

In comparison, our adult products contain no more than 1.0 ml ethanol/5ml dose and the Kid’s products contain no more than 0.4ml ethanol/5ml dose.

If you want to avoid alcohol completely for any reason, then we totally understand and support that. We have a range of medicinal teas which you extract in hot water, which sidesteps the issue completely.

What is the source of the glycerine in your products?

We proudly use only non-palm glycerine as we are very concerned about deforestation and the impact that palm oil has on natural habitats around the world.

Our glycerine is derived from rapeseed, soy, or coconut oil, depending on supply availability. Glycerine is distilled from oil, but it is a sugar alcohol - so while oils are used to make it, the end product doesn't contain them. They are tested to ensure that they don’t contain any of the source ingredient, which makes them suitable if you have allergies to the source oil.

In the artemis products, our goal is that that every ingredient has a purpose. Glycerine serves as a diabetic-suitable sweetener; as a way to support our immune products to do their job as it coats the throat and mucus membranes; and some products contain a glycerine extraction of the plants themselves.

I have blood pressure issues/am on blood pressure medication. Can I take your products which contain licorice?

With Licorice and blood pressure, it is all about the dose.  Please check the label or the product page for the individual product you are wanting to take to see if it is appropriate, and don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have more questions.

My liquid product has black specks in it, is there something wrong with it?

Nope!  This is the essential oils in the product which are used for flavouring.  Because we don’t use any additives, sometimes the essential oils congeal slightly or gather around the top of the bottle.  This happens particularly in cold weather or if the product hasn’t been shaken for a while.  Think of what happens to extra virgin olive oil when you put it in the fridge – same idea.

The specs should dissipate when the bottle is shaken and/or warmed up.  If some come out on a spoon you can also put them between your fingers and see if it dissolves with the warmth of your hand and then tastes of the oil in your product (see the ingredient list for this info).

If in doubt, contact us with the product name, batch number and expiry and we will be happy to help.
